They did not beat themselves by making mistakes. A professional regardless if in sports or in any field makes fewer mistakes than others. This is the reason they are a professional. He many not have more ability than another but he is superior for several reasons. Firstly he might want it more and secondly he has trained himself not to make mistakes. Some of the best teams in football are the ones that throughout the season have less penalties for infraction of the rules.
