Trend following stresses a disciplined approach to commodity/ futures trading. Successful trend following and commodity futures investing requires patience, discipline and actively managing the risk. What sets me apart from other traders is that I am not only concerned about the return on investment but how much risk I will have to tolerate to achieve my goals.

Using Indicators When Trend Following

There are those who seek to learn about every indicator and think they have found the “Holy Grail” when they find a new indicator. I was recently at a trading “Meetup” and I was shocked by the level of interest in finding new indicators. In discussions I had with some of the people I expressed my point that there is really one indicator that is important and that is price. It seems that so many are trying to search for the proverbial holy grail and I learned a long time ago it does not exist. Searching for this indicator or that indicator also leads me to point out, the actual definition of an indicator. An indicator is used a pointer or an instrument used to monitor the operation or condition. It seems that many try to use indicators to predict. There are discussions regarding leading and lagging indicators. Leading indicators are those that want to predict. In my years of experience these are both worthless. Everything is detailed in price action. I do not need fundamental information or reasons why. It is enough for me that something changed in the price of a particular market and that it is either one of the strongest or one of the weakest. I firstly identify my potential markets and then it must pass through a series of filters that enable me to put on a low risk trade. Because I put on a low risk trade does not mean it will work…but I have accepted the risk and know how much this trade will cost me to see if it will work. This is trend following. Putting on low risk trades, having no emotional attachment, accepting the risks and having discipline & patience for the plan to work.

If you are searching for indicators, this just indicates you have not internalized the core values of trend following.

Trend following is a lifetime strategy.

Futures trading involves risk. People can and do lose money
