Andrew Abraham

andy-0101 My name in Andrew Abraham. I have been investing in commodities and managed futures since 1994. I adhere to the philosophy of trend following. Trend following stresses a disciplined approach to commodity/ futures trading. Successful trend following and commodity futures investing requires patience, discipline and actively managing the risk. What sets me apart from other traders is that I am not only concerned about the return on investment but how much risk I will have to tolerate to achieve my goals.

Trend Following and Poker

Trend following and poker have many of the same attributes. I say all the time to my wife’s chagrin that trading is like poker. However I am not a gambler in any sense of the word. I take small low risk bets that in most cases do not work …but once in a while just because I make myself available I end up entering very large trades such as silver or cotton and profiting. In poker like in trend following a smart trader knows when to fold or exit a position. There is no emotional attachment to any trade and I can go long or short on any market. I know that I do not know the future and that anything can happen. This anything can happen, gets me out of a losing trade once it violates the reason for the entry. Like in poker a few big hands can make the big money. The wonder of trading a basket of commodities is that this strategy is not correlated to bonds and stocks and historically has provided me a compounded rate of return that has exceeded any bond or stock index investment.

Trend following is not easy by any sense of the word. There are always draw downs and tough periods. These tough periods (if one can get through them) have led to periods of strong trending markets. Trend following is a life time strategy for me.

The unique attributes of trend following in a managed account are:

Transparent and Liquid

The problem now is that you can not open a page in any newspaper in the world without seeing something about crude prices and food prices. This will lead many investors to try to invest in commodities. If one does not have a well thought out plan with built in money management this can lead to disaster. Even with a well thought out, tested plan there will be draw downs and at times strong volatility. Do not let this dissuade you though, just realize you must work in order to succeed in trend following. You have a choice but make a smart choice. A simple analogy, you can fly the plane yourself ( ie trade yourself) or let the pilot fly you to where you want to get to ( invest with a commodity trading advisor). I personally do both. My goal is to compound my money over long periods of time. I want to see what X dollars looks like in 10 years or 15 years. My hope is that it will be 4-5 times X in 10 years and in 15 years 8-10 times. My goal is to compound my way to wealth. It is not easy but if you have the right mindset, discipline, patience, risk measures, money management and robust system you put the odds of success on your side.

This is the reality of trend following.

Futures trading involves risk. People can and do lose money
