Andrew Abraham

andy-0101 My name in Andrew Abraham. I have been investing in commodities and managed futures since 1994. I adhere to the philosophy of trend following. Trend following stresses a disciplined approach to commodity/ futures trading. Successful trend following and commodity futures investing requires patience, discipline and actively managing the risk. What sets me apart from other traders is that I am not only concerned about the return on investment but how much risk I will have to tolerate to achieve my goals.

The Failure of Trend Following in the News

There was an article in the New York times that spoke about how trend followers and commodity trading advisers are ” Eating Crow”. I find articles like this very encouraging as in the past I have seen repeatedly pundits call for the demise of trend following. It reminds me of the front pages of Barrons magazine which are known as a great contrarian indicator. The reality is that trend following is very difficult emotionally and past returns are not indicative of future returns. One goes through long periods that profits are not generated as well as there are always draw downs. However compare this to investing in the Nasdaq which is still down now 10 years or the SP 500 which did not make money on an inflation basis, most trend followers who had a robust plan and strong money management compounded money.

Times like this are times to add to your exposure of trend followers and commodity trading advisers. The problem however is most investors feel more comfortable when profits are generated and that is the time when they invest. In my opinion this increases their risk. No one knows the future nor when or if any market will trend. All we can do is be available when it does.
