Andrew Abraham

andy-0101 My name in Andrew Abraham. I have been investing in commodities and managed futures since 1994. I adhere to the philosophy of trend following. Trend following stresses a disciplined approach to commodity/ futures trading. Successful trend following and commodity futures investing requires patience, discipline and actively managing the risk. What sets me apart from other traders is that I am not only concerned about the return on investment but how much risk I will have to tolerate to achieve my goals.

Dighton Capital Trading Blowup

There are always trading blowups in the investment arena. One noted blowup just occurred with Dighton Capital. Dighton is a discretionary commodity trading adviser in the field for 8 years with over $100 million dollars under management. Dighton’s methodology is a discretionary trading pattern of taking a contrarian stance against an outlier move. Their blowup is attributed to the Swiss Franc. Dighton had a -30% July and now in August another -50%.

Dighton is the complete opposite of systematic trend followers. Systematic trend followers do not predict anything nor do we limit extreme moves, we simply follow the trends. (For example I have been long the Swiss Franc since 4.20.11 at 1.1206. I simply took a low risk bet and it had been working even though giving up some ground recently). You never know what trades will work and which ones not ( most trades do not work however).

Dighton’s blowup is a glaring example of what not to do and what to do. Many systematic trend followers received signals for the Swiss Franc, went long and profited. The key is to take low risk bets. Dighton has been severely impacted from a single bad trade. There was an absence of risk per trade maximum.

What is interesting for investors in commodity trading advisers is do not chase returns. You need to understand exactly how the manager trades. Dighton had a CAR of almost 36% since 2003. This is extremely impressive…however today we see the cost.
