Andrew Abraham

andy-0101 My name in Andrew Abraham. I have been investing in commodities and managed futures since 1994. I adhere to the philosophy of trend following. Trend following stresses a disciplined approach to commodity/ futures trading. Successful trend following and commodity futures investing requires patience, discipline and actively managing the risk. What sets me apart from other traders is that I am not only concerned about the return on investment but how much risk I will have to tolerate to achieve my goals.

Non Stressful Commodity Trading

Non stressful Trading
Maybe it is a misnomer non stressful trading but it really hit me today. I am on a marathon tour of speaking to potential investors and IBs hoping to work with to raise money for my CTA. I have heard repeatedly how both parties are stressed from trading. I thought about myself and realized that I am almost oblivious to my trading results on a daily basis, monthly and even yearly. I am not stressed! ( At least from trading).

I can get stressed from my wife and two daughters but not from my trading. I am sure they will not read my blog.

Especially today when gold imploded and I had a nice long position I did not even think about it. At dinner I spoke to a colleague who is a shorter term trader than me and he told me had the trade of his career with gold. I thought to myself then he should be buying dinner( haha since I probably added to his trade of his career). What dawned on me about speaking to so many people this week is good trading should be stress free. Good trading does not mean making money always. Good trading means following a plan through thick and thin that has been developed overtime. One will never catch the top or a bottom of a move ( only liars will). When one trades with a well thought out plan that is robust with a strong dose of risk management trading should not be stressful. This does not mean that the trading will be profitable at all times. Far from it! In my trading most of the trades do not work( watch my words do not work)…do not work does not mean I take a personal feeling on any trade nor do I care if the trade works or not.

The key to non stressful is almost detaching themselves from the fear and greed which is so easy to generate. In my personal opinion one can only achieve non stressful trading is have full confidence in their trading plan. This full confidence gives them the courage to keep on trading when numerous trades in a row do not work ( Yes it will happen..more than you want them to). Non stressful traders realize they make their money over time. Actually a long periods of time. Putting this into perspective it makes the idea of any one trade meaningless. Putting low risk trades on compounds this idea. Most of these low risk trades will not work and one can ask themselves how much will this cost me to see “If it will work”. Trade with a plan that you believe in fully or invest with a CTA that you truly believe in. Trend following is not easy nor is it retirement in a box. Trend following is probably the hardest easiest thing you can ever do.
