Thank you for contacting me regarding the bankruptcy of MF Global.

I am deeply disturbed by allegations of the mixing of customer accounts with corporate accounts at MF Global. Such aggregation violates the basic tenets of a free and fair market: respect for personal property and market transparency. I believe it is important that we work to restore trust in the marketplace by improving oversight of the financial services industry.

That’s why I voted last year for the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (P.L. 111-203), which gave the Securities and Exchange Commission the ability to access proprietary information that could be used to investigate and stop fraudulent activity in our financial markets. Furthermore, the bill created a new whistleblower program at the SEC to encourage staff with information about potential fraudulent schemes to come forward, granting rewards of up to 30 percent of funds recovered.
