Andrew Abraham

andy-0101 My name in Andrew Abraham. I have been investing in commodities and managed futures since 1994. I adhere to the philosophy of trend following. Trend following stresses a disciplined approach to commodity/ futures trading. Successful trend following and commodity futures investing requires patience, discipline and actively managing the risk. What sets me apart from other traders is that I am not only concerned about the return on investment but how much risk I will have to tolerate to achieve my goals.

Investment Strategies & Trend Following at a Breakfast Meeting

Just finished an interesting breakfast with a potential investor. We discussed his investment strategies and his equity strategy at an early morning breakfast. I am chuckling as I am writing this short piece.

My proverbial investment strategies questions are:

1.How have your investment strategies worked even though I know he lost a great deal of money attempting to trade the markets ? ( Most investors and traders have issues that they are struggling with and the vast majority have not done very well overtime)

followed up with

2. What exactly have you struggled with & how can I assist you?

It is always interesting to hear the responses to these questions and even more interesting is practically no one I have ever met thought about having an exact trading plan with all contingencies thought out.( Thought out does not guarantee having profitable trades or avoid losing money )

Many times I am asked what do I think about this market or that market. They are baffled when I tell them I do not know. They expect me to know the future. I explain that not only that I do not know the future, I have not ever met anyone who has.

Anyway this mornings meeting was with a very successful real estate investor who has been stock trading and I wanted to present him my trend following strategies. We have had prior conversations and I felt good at least he took to heart one of my suggestions to a stop loss on his trades. He still believes he knows where the market is going and his win to loss ratio after several trades he told me was GREAT!

I listened attentively and asked him how many years he had been involved in real estate. It was something like 40 years. He got my point without a further word. I had met him years ago and know that he lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in the stock market prior. I told him that most people lose money trading. They lose money for numerous reasons, some of which were the above issues he stated…knowing where the market is going…not taking a loss…not having an exact robust trading plan…or seeking a high win to loss ratio.

I followed up that Gurus do not exist…that I am not a guru…and explained him exactly my whole strategy in a span of 5 minutes. It was the anti thesis of his which was “knowing” where the market is going…etc…

Bottom line I think he understood the weakness of the investment strategies he so believed in and has become somewhat of a believer of trend following.

Trend following is not easy nor is it for everyone. You will surely have losses and periods you do not make money. However there will be trends in markets which can be very profitable.

My course and webinars are not the Holy Grail as it does not exist. You will learn how to think like a trend follower as well as I will give you the exact methodologies in which I trade. If you want to learn how to trade for a living, I invite you to be one of my students.

PAST PERFORMANCE IS NOT NECESSARILY INDICATIVE OF FUTURE RESULTS. THE RISK OF LOSS IN TRADING COMMODITY FUTURES, OPTIONS, AND FOREIGN EXCHANGE (“FOREX”) IS SUBSTANTIAL.

HYPOTHETICAL PERFORMANCE RESULTS HAVE MANY INHERENT LIMITATIONS, SOME OF WHICH ARE DESCRIBED BELOW. NO REPRESENTATION IS BEING MADE THAT ANY ACCOUNT WILL OR IS LIKELY TO ACHIEVE PROFITS OR LOSSES SIMILAR TO THOSE SHOWN. IN FACT, THERE ARE FREQUENTLY SHARP DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HYPOTHETICAL PERFORMANCE RESULTS AND THE ACTUAL RESULTS SUBSEQUENTLY ACHIEVED BY ANY PARTICULAR TRADING PROGRAM. ONE OF THE LIMITATIONS OF HYPOTHETICAL PERFORMANCE RESULTS IS THAT THEY ARE GENERALLY PREPARED WITH THE BENEFIT OF HINDSIGHT. IN ADDITION, HYPOTHETICAL TRADING DOES NOT INVOLVE FINANCIAL RISK, AND NO HYPOTHETICAL TRADING RECORD CAN COMPLETELY ACCOUNT FOR THE IMPACT OF FINANCIAL RISK IN ACTUAL TRADING. FOR EXAMPLE, THE ABILITY TO WITHSTAND LOSSES OR TO ADHERE TO A PARTICULAR TRADING PROGRAM IN SPITE OF TRADING LOSSES ARE MATERIAL POINTS WHICH CAN ALSO ADVERSELY AFFECT ACTUAL TRADING RESULTS. THERE ARE NUMEROUS OTHER FACTORS RELATED TO THE MARKETS IN GENERAL OR TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ANY SPECIFIC TRADING PROGRAM WHICH CANNOT BE FULLY ACCOUNTED FOR IN THE PREPARATION OF HYPOTHETICAL PERFORMANCE RESULTS AND ALL OF WHICH CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT ACTUAL TRADING RESULTS

Bottom line is that the majority of the people I have met on this trip have struggled in one way or another and are tired of just trusting so called Guru money managers.
