Andrew Abraham

andy-0101 My name in Andrew Abraham. I have been investing in commodities and managed futures since 1994. I adhere to the philosophy of trend following. Trend following stresses a disciplined approach to commodity/ futures trading. Successful trend following and commodity futures investing requires patience, discipline and actively managing the risk. What sets me apart from other traders is that I am not only concerned about the return on investment but how much risk I will have to tolerate to achieve my goals.

Napoleon Hill – Think and Grow Rich- How it Applies to Trend Following

I read over the weekend Napoleon Hill’s book- Think and Grow Rich. It is ideal for enhancing trading psychology. Trading pyschology is the key of success when trading. Lets face it…everyone is looking at the same charts. I truly believe that no one knows anything than more than others. The difference is successful traders & trend followers have an exact plan in which they follow consistently. It is full of risk management and money management. No secret sauces rather simple ideas that make sense in the real world.

Part of the book of Napoleon Hill – Think and Grow Rich I highlighted was quitting and truly believing in succeeding. There was a part in the book that spoke about a gold miner. He found a vein of gold. He needed additional funding to further dig and returned home to raise money from family & friends. He acquired the money and went back to work. To his great dismay the vein of gold ended. He could not find any more. He dug and he dug..His frustration grew. He dug more and more. He finally came to the conclusion that there was no more gold. He sold off his expensive digging equipment and quit. The man who purchased the equipment found an expert to advise him. The expert suggested that he only needed to dig three feet more in order to find the gold. He did so and hit the jackpot. He hit the gold vein and became RICH.

What is the moral of this story? The first miner quit right before finding the large gold vein. He only had to dig another 3 feet. Rather he quit out of frustration. This is the same with trend following. We put on trades. So many of them do not work. The vast majority saw this strategy does not work and quit. Then out of no where trends appear.

This is trend following. Constant losses…long periods of draw downs…and then out of no where…moves. We just do not know which stocks or which markets or when this will happen. Traders want certainty. There is no certainty in trend following. Just uncertainty….

In order to find this proverbial gold pot, we have to dig and not give up. Trend following is a marathon. It is never easy…or better said…it is only easy during very short periods in rare occasions.

Past performance is not indicative of future performance
